How It Works

Teacher Education Fellowship

As a Teacher Education Graduate Fellow, you'll take summer courses to prepare for your residency and then transition to evening classes while participating in your residency classroom. In your fellowship residency, you’ll engage in a range of classroom-based activities, including small group instruction, co-teaching, and ultimately, independent classroom instruction.

After completing your coursework, residency and a portfolio project, you'll graduate with a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and licensure in your chosen area of specialization:

LICENSURE CONCENTRATIONS 

We offer multiple licensure programs that have been approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Interstate Certification Compact of the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education.

Merrimack College is authorized to endorse teacher candidates in the following multiple content areas: Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, General Science, English, History, and Humanities.

The English as a Second Language graduate program prepares candidates to serve linguistically and culturally diverse students in PreK-6 classrooms.

The graduate program in Early Childhood Education prepares candidates to become teachers of children in grades PreK-2. In addition to challenging and engaging coursework, students gain a rich and relevant preparation for teaching by participating in a full-time practicum in early childhood classrooms.

The graduate program in Elementary Education prepares candidates to work in grades 1-6. Through coursework and field experiences, students develop an understanding of subject matter knowledge, curriculum design, instructional strategies, observation and assessment, communication, and collaboration with families and the community.

The graduate program in Moderate Disabilities prepares candidates to work with children in grades PreK-8 with moderate disabilities who participate in integrated or self-contained classrooms.

Higher Education Fellowship

You'll complete a nine-month field-based experience within Merrimack College or a partner institution, serving 25 hours a week at your placement site. At the same time, you'll  take graduate courses in the summer and on afternoons and evenings throughout the academic year to
earn your 36-credit M.Ed. in Higher Education in one year – tuition free.

As a Higher Education Graduate Fellow, you’ll enter the workforce with hands-on experience, strong mentoring from outstanding faculty, excellent writing and research skills, and a body of work (including a capstone project) that exhibits your abilities and values.
